R. Scott Nelson is a former U.S. Navy Cryptologic Technician Interpreter (CTI) and a two-time graduate of the Defense Language Institute. During his 20-year career in naval cryptology, he specialized in Russian, Spanish, and Persian while conducting the collection, transcription, and analysis of hundreds of hours of recorded voice communications.

After retiring from the Navy, Scott spent more than two decades in education, including 20 years teaching at Wentworth Military College and later serving at Missouri Military Academy as Chair of the Philosophy and Language Department.

In 2008, Scott encountered the famous Sierra Sounds, also known as the Berry–Morehead recordings, recorded in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Drawing on his background in linguistic analysis and voice transcription, he began studying the recordings and concluded that the vocalizations appear to exhibit structural patterns consistent with a complex, human-like language.

Since then, Scott has continued analyzing the recordings and presenting his findings at conferences and events across the country, offering a unique perspective that blends military cryptologic training, linguistics, and the enduring mystery surrounding Sasquatch communication.
